How to Get Your Home Ready for Christmas
The busiest time of the year is almost upon us and there always seems to be a to-do list longer than Santa’s naughty and nice list. There are lots of visitors, needing to put the tree up, taking the tree down again and, of course, finding the right storage to help keep your home neat and tidy.
Whether you’re the host with the most or it’s your first Christmas in your new home, we’ll help you prepare, adding a sparkle to the season with our essential guide to preparations.
Cleaning Up for Christmas
It’s a good idea to give your home a thorough clean in the lead-up to the holidays. It’s particularly wise to break your cleaning tasks down into manageable chunks, cleaning little and often, rather than doing one big winter clean which can take precious time out of the calendar.
Think of it like an advent (cleaning) calendar.
Love Your Living Room This Christmas
Your living room is probably going to be the most used room of the house throughout December. Any guest that comes to visit will more than likely be ushered into this room so you’ll need to ensure it’s spick and span, but still inviting.
Start by giving everything the once-over with the duster before you put the Christmas decorations up; wipe down the skirting boards, dust the coves and polish any surfaces.
Next up – the Christmas tree. If you’ve got a real tree, start by sawing off an inch or so from the bottom of the trunk, secure it in your tree stand and fill with water. Leave the tree for 24 hours before decorating it to allow the branches to settle into place and drop any loose needles. After you’ve decorated is the time to hoover.
When you’ve got the rest of your decorations in place, you can start to think about any other festive treats to add to your home. What about Christmas scents? There’s an abundance of scented candles and diffusers you can buy, but nothing really captures the scent of the season as much as a fresh festive scent. If you put a pot of water with oranges, apples, vanilla and cinnamon on the stove on a low heat it will slowly fill the air with a zesty and spicy scent – perfect for Christmas.
Finally, how do you maximise your storage at a time when space is a virtue?
